The pueo is the only native Hawaiian owl. It inhabits open grasslands, hunting human-brought rodents. Before human settlement it's likely that pueo hunted dusk. They make a soft grass ground nest, rare for owls. Mothers lay 3-6 eggs, while fathers bring food and defend the nest. Owlets need parenting for a couple of months.
